Maasai Ngosuani Greening Project

Community Recycling and Waste Management Program
Town of Talek in Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
Project Story
The Maasai Ngosuani Greening Project seeks to solve the waste management problem plaguing their growing town in the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The environmental concern is threatening the growth of this small center and negatively affecting the lives of the people and surrounding wildlife. This project, spearheaded by local leader John Matelong Saiyalel, will empower the Maasai community members by educating them on recycling and waste management practices, as well as assist local leaders in developing a strategic management plan. Through community participation and education, the Maasai Ngosuani community will work together to ensure waste is managed at its earliest disposal stage.
With the support of the Purpose Earth grant, the Maasai Ngosuani Greening Project will be able to start funding the construction on two waste management sites, begin purchasing the necessary equipment for collection and provide public trainings.

“The fact that we are the indigenous people of this land, with a high level of illiteracy, we are so vulnerable with the growth of the tourism industry in the 21st century. People need to be educated on choices put ahead of them in order to be able to protect the land and its habitats. Environmental pollution is a major threat to our survival and that is why I am developing this initiative that could save this beautiful ecosystem for humanity and wildlife.”

- John Matelong Saiyalel, Founder
